Native plant sowing guide

Sowing native plants from seed can be a great way to add plants to your garden while saving money. All you need is time and a little know-how and you're well on your way. Native plants can differ from growing annuals and some other perennials only because many of them have naturally evolved to germinate after our long, cold, and moist winters. Our Master Gardener Laura has written a great guide to get you started. Read our Native Plant Sowing Guide to learn more!

Native Plant Profiles

  • A native garden can be designed much like any other perennial bed when you think about texture, colour, structure, size, placement, soil type, light requirements, moisture requirements. We have created profiles to feature plants that you may wish to add to your gardens when thinking about gardening for nature.

  • If you want to attract nature, read in the profiles, which species of insect or birds are attracted to the native plants.

  • Some native plants are a sole requirement for the existence of specific insect species and are called host plants.

  • We are working on this section, but below you will find pdf versions of the profiles to download or read.
