Grand Erie Master Gardeners, once again in collaboration with Birds Canada, is excited to announce our 3rd and final workshop of summer, 2024. We will start the day with two presentations in the beautiful Events Room at Bird’s Canada’s National Headquarters in Port Rowan. The first presentation will highlight native plants that fuel the southward fall bird migration that will be well underway. The 2nd presentation will focus on native plants that thrive in shade, including ferns and other herbaceous understory plants and shrubs. After lunch, we will head to nearby Backus Woods, an outstanding mature Carolinian Forest, for a leisurely, interpretive walk.
Along the trails we will see a diversity of shade tolerant plants growing beneath a tree canopy of towering tulip trees, black gum, white, red and black oaks, sugar maples and many others.
We will highlight the conditions under which different shade plants are thriving in their natural setting - information that can help inform gardeners on how to succeed with these shade tolerant species in their home landscape.
